IPTC’s 2024 Spring Meeting took place in New York City, USA.

This year, the meeting was being hosted by two longstanding IPTC members: The New York Times and The Associated Press.

Event details

As well as updates from IPTC Working Groups such as the News Architecture Working Group, Photo Metadata Working Group, Video Metadata Working Group, NewsCodes Working Group and Sports Content Working Group, we heard from exciting projects in the media and startup space from members, invited companies and local startups.

Agenda

Day 1: Monday 15 April – NYT Conference Center

  • Introduction and welcome from Brendan Quinn, IPTC Managing Director and Robert Schmidt-Nia, IPTC Chair
  • Update from Google, a recently-joined IPTC Voting Member
  • Updates from IPTC Photo Metadata Working Group and IPTC Sports Content Working Group
  • Roundtable discussion on a forthcoming IPTC Policy Paper on metadata for Artificial Intelligence
  • AP presenting the recently-published AI in the Newsroom Report
  • Presentations from member organisations on their AI strategies and progress
  • Presentations from invited guests and IPTC member companies
  • Discussion of IPTC’s proposed simplified rights models
  • Catered lunch, coffee breaks and networking time for members and guests to get to know each other better

Day 2: Tuesday 16 April – AP offices

  • IPTC NewsML-G2 Working Group and IPTC Video Metadata Working Group updates
  • Presentations from Elvex AI and Vanderbilt Television News Archive
  • Progress Software demonstrating how to implement IPTC standards using their tools
  • A guided tour of the Associated Press archives
  • Catered lunch, breaks and networking time for members and guests

Day 3: Wednesday 17 April – NYT Conference Center

  • IPTC NewsCodes Working Group update
  • IPTC Standards Committee Meeting, led by Paul Harman of Bloomberg, IPTC Standards Committee Chair
  • Presentations of two organisations working with AFP: Kairntech (on news classification) and IMATAG (on image watermarking)
  • Updates on C2PA, Project Origin and the recently-formed IPTC Media Provenance Committee
  • A guided tour of the New York Times archives
  • Catered lunch, breaks and networking time for members and guests
